Health Plan

Updated on August 13, 2021.

No. However, we will have a user-friendly plan for students out of school for short-term situations (typically less than one week). This plan will closely resemble conventional plans from previous years for illness or other reasons. A more personalized plan will be made available for long-term absences, such as quarantine (typically more than one week). For such situations, students and parents should contact Ms. Carwell and Mrs. Sezonov. Medical documentation will be required for these personalized learning plans.

Yes. But at this time, Wheaton Academy will not require the daily reporting form on Magnus that was in place last year. Nevertheless, we need everyone’s cooperation in being strict to keep sick students and staff members home.

  • No. Our intent has been to allow families to make their own decisions. The recent Gubernatorial Emergency Executive Order currently has imposed a mask mandate on all schools (public and nonpublic). The ISBE has threatened significant consequences to schools who do not comply, including removal of ISBE recognition which will eliminate our participation in IHSA sports and use of donor-funded scholarships through the Invest In Kids scholarship program.
  • Since the updated regulations, we have done a lot of last minute work to adjust desks to be at least 6 feet apart again. This is especially important as we work to navigate the health departments’ guidelines around contact tracing.
  • Per Federal and State mandates, masks will be required when traveling on buses.
  • Masks are not required outdoors.

We anticipate full sports seasons this year. The recent executive order requires masking indoors, including during sports activities. Specific direction will be provided by your coach and the athletic department.

  • Similarly to last school year, upon notification of a positive COVID-19 case, the school nurse will contact families of the possible close contacts identified by the positive COVID-19 student or staff member. Wheaton Academy will cooperate with the local health department in its efforts to contact trace and encourages families to do so as well. Families will be asked to quarantine should they meet the definition of a close contact per the health departments’ guidelines.
  • At Wheaton Academy, we are blessed with enough space to allow for physically distancing classrooms up to and beyond 6 feet. This will allow us to mitigate the potential of students being identified as a close contact.
  • Mask use under 6’ will also reduce possibilities of being a close contact.

No. Wheaton Academy will not require or track this status. However, at this time, you will see some shortcuts in the health plan for staff members and students who volunteer this information. Magnus does allow an option to provide COVID-19 vaccination status if desired.

  • Individuals with COVID-19-like symptoms such as fever, loss of taste/smell, sore throat, new cough, vomiting, diarrhea, and/or body aches should be tested, and if positive, quarantine at home for 10 days. Return to school can occur after 10 days and including 24 hours with no fever and improvement of symptoms. Vaccinated individuals may return after 24 hours without symptoms.
  • Your student will be able to continue with their Wheaton Academy education during quarantine. Please contact Ms. Carwell in these situations to receive a personalized learning plan.
  • If anyone is exposed to a confirmed positive case of COVID-19, the staff member or student must quarantine for 14 days;
  • If no symptoms of COVID-19 develop during the quarantine period, the staff or student may return to school on day 10;
  • If the staff-member or student have been vaccinated, they may return the next day, but are asked to continue to monitor symptoms and not come to school if any develop;
  • If a staff-member or student has been recently recovered from COVID-19, they may return the next day. They may be asked to provide an anti-bodies test;
  • Your student will be able to continue with their Wheaton Academy education during quarantine. Please contact Ms. Carwell in these situations to receive a personalized learning plan.
  • Knowing what to do after being identified as a close contact can be confusing, please view the decision chart here or contact the school nurse.
  • Upon reporting the positive test to the school nurse, specific instructions will be given regarding isolation and quarantine of others in the household. As a reminder, fully vaccinated individuals in the same household will not need to quarantine if they are without symptoms. Vaccination status would have to be confidentially volunteered to our school nurse, as the school nurse will not ask.
  • Individuals awaiting test results due to exposure are asked to please stay home.
  • Your student will be able to continue with their Wheaton Academy education during quarantine. Please contact Ms. Carwell in these situations to receive a personalized learning plan.

Classrooms will be set up with desks at least 6’ apart. Chapel, Community Time, classrooms, lunch areas, and co-curricular activities will all function at normal capacity limits. Lunch will be served in the Commons as it was prior to the 2020-21 school year. In addition, all students will have a locker and will not need to opt-in to locker use.

  • We will continue with nightly cleanings using approved and effective products. We have contracted with a professional company for this need once again.
  • We also will continue to maintain our hand sanitizing stations throughout the campus and encourage regular handwashing. In addition, good hygiene practices will be a common topic with our students.

Please submit your request for an exemption, preferably including a letter from a professional, to Jenn Sezonov, our school nurse. Our COVID team will look at each request individually and then make a determination. We will communicate with appropriate faculty and staff once the request is granted.
